Johannes and Lucas van DOETECUM after Hieronymus BOSCH (c. 1450 - 1516): 'The Temptation of St. Anthony' - 1561 (detail) Outstanding impression enhanced at the time in gouache colours.

Image:

REMBRANDT (1606 - 1669): 'Christ Returning from the Temple with his Parents' - 1654. Very rare counterproof printed on laid paper. Bartsch 60; New Hollstein 276, only state. Provenance: Charles Delanglade (b. 1870) (Lugt 660).

Among the recent acquisitions we present here, we would like to single out a few scarce and important prints. Some are impressions of very rare states, such as 'Dido’s Suicide' by Hans Sebald BEHAM - a wonderful impression of the first state before reduction of the plate - or 'A Sacrifice' by Léon DAVENT - 1st state of 3, also before reduction of the plate. Some are known only by a very small number of impressions: the portrait of 'Henri II, King of France', by Jan Cornelisz. VERMEYEN (1500 - 1559) was previously known from only two impressions, both held at the Rijksmuseum. The 'Allegory on the Good and the Corrupted Tree' by Gillis VAN BREEN (ca. 1560 - 1602) is known from only one other impression, in the British Museum. Just as rare are the pair of 'Allegories of Death' attributed to a member of the COLLAERT family, 'Vigilantia' by Jean CHARTIER, the 'Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt' by Sebastiano de VALENTINIS, or the 'Nymphaeum' by Robert BOISSARD. Another highlight of our stand is the very rare impression of 'The Temptation of St. Anthony' by Johannes and Lucas van DOETECUM after Hieronymus BOSCH, enhanced at the time in gouache colours. We are also pleased to present two outstanding impressions by REMBRANDT: a rare counterproof of 'Christ Returning from the Temple with his Parents' and a very fine impression of 'Young Man in a Velvet Cap (Petrus Sylvius?)'. We finally would like to distinguish an exceptional and precious collection of four volumes containing several series of illustrations etched by Félix BUHOT for three novels by Barbey d'Aurevilly: 'L'Ensorcelée', 'Le Chevalier Des Touches', 'Une vieille maîtresse', and for Alphonse Daudet's 'Lettres de mon moulin', with various trial impressions, some of which have been retouched and annotated, and a handwritten page by Buhot specifying the print-runs for the different series. Full descriptions of all our prints can be found in the downloadable pdf at the top left of this page, and on our website.
